The art of Alexander Millar

Alexander was born in 1960 in Springside, small mining community on the west coast of Scotland. His father worked for British Rail and Alexander got great pleasure from simply sitting in the atmospheric steam filled stations.

In 1976 Alexander left Springside for Newcastle upon Tyne where he found it had (and still has), its fair share of characters locally known as ‘Gadgies’, which fed him much inspiration later on in life when he finally discovered his destiny as an artist.

After a number of different jobs Alexander became a professional artist in 1988. He is completely self-taught and after many years of developing his own style he turned to images from his childhood and using the local Tyneside ‘Gadgies’ as models in his paintings.

Following a number of sell out exhibitions one of his paintings was entered in the Daily Mail’s ‘Not the Turner Prize’. Ten thousand works were entered and his painting was chosen as one of the finalists and was exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London.
